How to Read Your Vedic Birth Chart

The chart you see is laid out in a formation that looks like a diamond shape. The twelve sectors of this layout are the twelve houses of your birth chart. Each of the twelve sectors contains a number representing one of the twelve zodiac signs. The numbers of the zodiac signs are as follows:

  1. Aries
  2. Taurus
  3. Gemini
  4. Cancer
  5. Leo
  6. Virgo
  7. Libra
  8. Scorpio
  9. Sagittarius
  10. Capricorn
  11. Aquarius
  12. Pisces

The zodiac is laid out in a counter-clockwise order in this style of chart. The square in the very top and center of the chart is your ascendant, marked by the abbreviation “Asc”. If this sector contains, for example the number “4”, that means you have Cancer as your ascendant. If it contains a “1”, you have Aries as your ascendant, etc. The ascendant is also referred to as the first house of your birth chart.

How to See the Houses of Your Chart

If you count inclusively through the sectors of the chart in a counter-clockwise order, this will show you the houses of your chart. This means that the sector just to the left of your first house is the second house. The sector just below that sector is the third house, on through the rest of the chart. There are many significations for each house of an astrological birth chart, but here are some very basic meanings related to each house:

  • First house: self, physical body
  • Second house: accumulated wealth, speech
  • Third house: written communication, younger sibling
  • Fourth house: home, mother
  • Fifth house: children, intelligence
  • Sixth house: enemies, diseases
  • Seventh house: spouse, promotions
  • Eighth house: sudden transformations, occult study
  • Ninth house: religion, father
  • Tenth house: career, bosses
  • Eleventh house: income, elder sibling
  • Twelfth house: losses, spirituality

In any of these sectors you may see some abbreviations. These are the positions of the planets in your chart. “Su” means the Sun, “Mo” is the Moon, “Ma” represents Mars, “Me” Mercury, “Ju” Jupiter, “Ve” Venus, “Sa” Saturn, “Ra” Rahu, and “Ke” is Ketu. If for example, you count six places counter-clockwise away from the first house, and you see the abbreviation “Ra” in this sector, this means that you have Rahu placed in your sixth house, etc.

This chart will show you a basic overview of the positions of your ascendant, sun, moon and all of the other planets. If you have never seen your chart before, this is a great first step toward gaining a deeper understanding of yourself through Vedic astrology.
