How to Read Your Vedic Birth Chart
The chart is displayed in the traditional North Indian diamond layout. Each of the twelve sectors represents one of the twelve houses. Inside each sector, you’ll see a number corresponding to a zodiac sign, as well as abbreviations for planets placed in that house.
- 1 = Aries
- 2 = Taurus
- 3 = Gemini
- 4 = Cancer
- 5 = Leo
- 6 = Virgo
- 7 = Libra
- 8 = Scorpio
- 9 = Sagittarius
- 10 = Capricorn
- 11 = Aquarius
- 12 = Pisces
The zodiac is laid out in a counter-clockwise order. The square in the very top and center of the chart is your ascendant, marked by the abbreviation “Asc”. If this sector contains for example, the number “4”, that means you have Cancer as your ascendant. If it contains a “1”, you have Aries as your ascendant, etc. The ascendant is also referred to as the 1st house of your birth chart.
How to See the Houses of Your Chart
If you count inclusively through the sectors of the chart in a counter-clockwise order, this will show you the houses of your chart. This means that the sector just to the left of your first house is the 2nd house. The sector just below that sector is the 3rd house, on through the rest of the chart. There are many significations for each house of a birth chart, but here are some very basic meanings related to each house:
- 1st House: Self, body, identity
- 2nd House: Wealth, speech, family resources
- 3rd House: Communication, courage, siblings
- 4th House: Home, mother, emotional foundation
- 5th House: Children, creativity, intelligence
- 6th House: Challenges, health, daily work
- 7th House: Marriage, partnerships
- 8th House: Transformation, longevity, occult
- 9th House: Father, dharma, higher wisdom
- 10th House: Career, status, authority
- 11th House: Income, gains, community
- 12th House: Losses, liberation, spirituality
In any of these sectors you may see some abbreviations. These are the positions of the planets in your chart.
- Su = Sun
- Mo = Moon
- Ma = Mars
- Me = Mercury
- Ju = Jupiter
- Ve = Venus
- Sa = Saturn
- Ra = Rahu (North Node)
- Ke = Ketu (South Node)
If for example, you count six places counter-clockwise away from the 1st house, and you see the abbreviation “Ra” in this sector, this means that you have Rahu placed in your 6th house.
